Trump argues U.S. control of Greenland crucial to counter Russia, China
“If we don't take Greenland, Russia or China will take Greenland, and I am not going to let that happen ... but one way or the other, we're going to have Greenland,” Trump told reporters while traveling aboard Air Force One from Florida to Washington, D.C.
He argued that Greenland should agree to such an arrangement for its own protection and long-term stability. “Greenland should make the deal, because Greenland does not want to see Russia or China take over,” he said.
The president emphasized that he is not interested in temporary measures such as leasing land, but rather a full and lasting acquisition. “We're talking about acquiring, not leasing, not having it short-term. We're talking about acquiring. If we don't do it, Russia or China will, and that's not going to happen when I'm president,” he added.
Trump pointed out that while the U.S. already maintains military bases on Greenland, that presence is insufficient. “You need ownership ... You really need title,” he said, underscoring his push for outright control of the territory.
